We are looking for a highly qualified scientist or engineer in the field of optimization, control, and machine learning, ideally with additional expertise in industrial automation or energy management systems. Your key focus will be to develop innovative software solutions to drive the digitalization and optimization of automation, manufacturing, electrification and process technologies. To that end, you will initiate, lead and participate in applied research projects in the field. You will work on the fascinating boundary of research and software development within an international team of highly motivated scientists. As a member of our research group, your job covers everything from problem analysis and data exploration via model and software development to project management. You enable new ways of operating, maintaining, controlling and optimizing industrial assets and electrification systems. Your technical and cross-cultural communication skills will contribute to creating connections between internal research, external research and academia as well as ABB's international business lines. In particular, your job will comprise: Elicitation of domain requirements and use cases for international, multi-disciplinary research projects that unlock value for ABB's business lines and end customers. Development of nonlinear and mixed-integer optimization, robust model-predictive control, advanced process control, and machine learning methods to process complex industrial data sets and to increase the level of autonomy of automation and electrification systems, such that scheduling in process industries or energy management systems. Validation of concepts by high-quality software prototypes and demonstrators. Communication of project results and complex solutions to expert and senior management audiences. Presentation of results at scientific conferences, creation of invention disclosures and work in committees. Build-up of strategic partnerships with international academia and work in public funded projects.

Requirements You completed a postgraduate university degree (PhD or MSc with relevant working experience) in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering with above-average performance. The position requires strong hands-on experience with software development. We expect you to have cross-cultural communication skills as well as pronounced networking skills. Proficient English (both oral and written) is mandatory to communicate with external as well as internal international partners and the academic community.
